California Water Environment Association 2019 Engineering and Research Achievement Award

Dr. Caliskaner was the principal investigator and project manager for the primary filtration (PF) technology development project which received the first place for California Water Environment Association Engineering and Research Achievement Award in 2019. The project was sponsored by the California Energy Commission and the Los Angeles County Sanitation District and Kennedy/Jenks Consultants shared the award because of their partnership for the evaluation of the primary filtration process at the Lancaster Water Reclamation Plant. The results from the Lancaster project demonstrated some of the key benefits of PF including enhanced removal of particulates and organics and a related reduction in activated sludge process aeration energy requirements.

2018 Best Manuscript Abstract Martha Hahn Award
Each year the Water Environment Federation Technical Exhibition and Conference (WEFTEC) Program Committee selects the highest-rated abstract in the Municipal Track to receive the Martha Hahn Memorial Recognition. This award recognizes those who advance knowledge, the dissemination of information, and continual experimentation and growth. Dr. Caliskaner received this award in 2018 for the manuscript titled "Full Scale and Demonstration-Scale Primary Filtration Projects Show Great Promise."
This paper focuses on primary filtration (PF) as an advanced primary treatment technology that can be used to replace primary sedimentation.
Publications

Dr. Caliskaner has over 100 publications/presentations in primary filtration, carbon diversion, advanced primary treatment, tertiary filtration, water reuse, process modeling, energy efficiency, and water quality issues. He is co-author of the Water Environment Federation’s Manual of Practice No. 8 (MOP8), “Design of Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plants,” October 2009. He is also the author of the tertiary filtration and emerging/advanced primary treatment technologies (including primary effluent and primary filtration) sections of the updated MOP8 (October 2017). He has published research articles on tertiary filtration, primary filtration, and modeling in peer reviewed journals. Contact Onder if you would like to receive a copy of his publications.
